1. 5 roles
· Try to fulfill only 5 roles in your life at any one time (e.g., parent, spouse, friend, son, golfer, manager, volunteer, etc.)
· Every time you add a role, take one off
· Evaluate your roles and make choices…particularly during life transitions
2. Use one schedule
· Keep work and personal obligations on one calendar system
· Schedule in fitness and important events
3. Don’t miss defining moments
· Never miss big events that are important in your life (e.g., anniversaries, birthdays, important family events)
· Identify what they are and don’t let P&G come first
4. Take real vacations
· Leave you PC, Blackberry at home!
· Don’t check messages – the business will survive without you
5. Master writing
· Learn to write well and do so efficiently
· Practice the skill
6. Practice 80/20
· Perfectionists have Work Life Effectiveness issues
· 80% is OK- ask yourself is there value in getting to 100%
7. Train your people
· Dedicate time to your people and invest in their development.
· Managers, who do not train people, get into a vicious circle - i.e. they don’t train, their people are not as effective, they have to do things for them, and eventually they cannot get their basic work done.
· Investing in others makes it easier to succeed - you free up time as those who work for you increase their capability.
8. Exercise daily
· For every 30 minutes of exercise per day, you need 1 hour less sleep. If you reduce your sleep need by being fit, then you can gain an hour a day.
· Deep sleep is critical to relax. Aerobics can help.
· Learn to manage your energy.
9. Keep relationships high in your life
· Nurture relationships, stay in touch, communicate
· Do not make it a competition between P&G
10. Leverage technology
· Where can technology help you save time in your life?
· How can you use technology to operate more efficiently?
11. 100 Things
· Have an outside of work sense of fulfillment
· Create your list of things you’d like to do/ accomplish before you die and try to do 2 per year.
· You are only indispensable in your life
12. Trust & delegate
· If you expect people to achieve, they will
· People rise to our highest expectations or sink to our lowest
13. Use the ‘Mother Rule’
· Stop internal debates and move on
· Improve efficiency of decision making – if your mother wouldn’t care, you shouldn’t either!
